Colonie Les Bosquets Camp Papillon’s Little Sister
Located in Otterburn Park, on the shores of the Richelieu River, the Colonie Les Bosquets Albert Hudon was established in 1947. It was the fruit of a trust which, according the wishes of the famous Montreal entrepreneur, had the mission of welcoming catholic, orphan, and poor children.
Since then, various non-profit organisations have become, in turn, the beneficiaries of the trust: they are, among others, the Institut Dominique-Savio and the Base de plein air Honoré-Mercier. Today, the Colonie Les Bosquets Albert Hudon offers quality vacations entirely adapted for people living with an intellectual disability, “the new orphans of our society”.
In December 2003, the Trust donated the site and its buildings to the Quebec Society for Disabled Children. Therefore, the Colonie Les Bosquets Albert Hudon will carry on its activities mainly in favour of people who have a pervasive development disorder (autism or other P.D.D.) as well as people living with an intellectual disability. For example, the Emergo Respite Services and P.D.D. offer on the site of Colonie Les Bosquets Albert Hudon services that meet the specific needs of autistic individuals from all over Quebec. The Society has furthermore implemented a respite program in support of families who have a child with a disability.
The country in the heart of the city, well… almost.
Less than forty minutes from downtown Montreal, the Colonie Les Bosquets Albert Hudon occupies a surface of more than 5 million square feet in Otterburn Park. The site has lots of green spaces and heavily wooded areas criss-crossed by acres of trails. Winter and summer, the Colonie can host in its facilities some 120 campers and counsellors at a time. It offers, year in and year out, more than 12,000 night-stays to 1,000 people for vacation stays.
Sponsored by the International Order of Alhambra, the site also includes a cafeteria, a respite residence, recreational areas, as well as a swimming pool. Since 1928, the Order of Alhambra raises and distributes funds to the benefit of the intellectually disabled. The development and the continuity of Colonie Les Bosquets rest on the generosity and the loyalty of the members of the Order and of the Alhambra Foundation as well as on their sincere conviction that a better world necessarily includes an improvement of the quality of life of our society’s most vulnerable people, particularly those living with an intellectual disability.
