At the service of the children since 1932…

Transport Papillon is the very first service implemented by the Quebec Society for Disabled Children. On July 15, 1932, the Kiwanis Club of Montreal donated to the Society its very first vehicle to transport the children. At the time, the objective of this service was to enable the children to receive the care they needed such as therapeutic baths, massages and physiotherapy by driving them to the clinics and hospitals that provided these services.

Over the years, this service increased in scale. Transport Papillon reached its peak in the 1980s. The organisation owned ten vehicles for the daily transportation of children towards the Sainte-Justine Hospital, the Montreal Children’s Hospital or towards other medical resources. In that year only, 15,000 transportation units of children were recorded.

In 1993, when hospitals were granted subsidies for the transportation of people with disabilities and the development of adapted transportation in municipalities, the Society ended this part of the service and, from then on, Transport Papillon was devoted exclusively to the transportation of children with disabilities who attended daycare.

The new project, the Jardin des Papillons and the brand new Papillon Daycare will, in the next few years, be the spearhead of Transport Papillon. The service will aim to facilitate the children’s access to these new resources that meet the ever-increasing needs of the community. The minibuses of the Society, offered by Teamsters Quebec, will pick up the children in the morning and take them back home at the end of the day.
